The one hundred sixty acres which was the original site for Imperial Golf Club was a beautiful natural piney-wooded area with some low spots full of Cypress. In 1972 this land became available to Jim Murphy to build a golf course. It was rare opportunity for Jim and Deb Mills to start from scratch and create a first class golf club.
Eight other friends also wanted to participate, making it a viable idea. A land trust was formed.
After discussions with several golf course architects, Arthur Hill was chosen. Jim Murphy did not want a "typical Florida" course and insisted on "rolling hills and lakes", with some of the holes laid out in just a certain way that he had in mind. A forested course was planned, now our East course.
Among the many things discussed during the construction was a proper name for "Naples finest golf course". Each member of the land trust submitted ideas and most thought the word "pine" was a natural due to the heavy forestation on the site. Finally, Imperial was suggested by Jim Murphy as he had a successful Texas development with the same name. Feeling success breeds success, Imperial Golf Club was voted in as the chosen name.
On November 15, 1973, Imperial Golf Course opened - right on schedule - with Mary Murphy striking a ball off the first tee to officially open our East course.
Ward Northrup designed our West course which is more "southern" in design. The back nines were opened December 1, 1978 followed by the opening of the front nine on May 15, 1979.
